For fifty years, Acxiom has been a leader in privacy and data ethics, using information to help brands understand customers and make marketing more relevant. Jordan Abbott, Chief Privacy Officer at Acxiom, released the following statement regarding the enactment of the Consumer Data Privacy Act in Virginia:
“Acxiom applauds Virginia for bipartisan passage of the Consumer Data Privacy Act (CDPA), which Governor Ralph Northam signed into law yesterday. CDPA will equip Virginia consumers with the right to know who has their data, how it is used, and additional control over their personal data, including rights to access, correct, and delete personal data companies process about them.
While not perfect, the CDPA serves as a good starting point for privacy legislation. All consumers – regardless of the state they reside in – deserve meaningful privacy protections, which can only be achieved through federal action. A patchwork of state laws creates inefficiencies, fails to adequately protect all consumers, and puts a significant financial burden on businesses given the high cost of compliance. We believe it is in our country’s best interest to have a national privacy standard that benefits both businesses and consumers by providing uniformity, in transparency and control, without deterring innovation.
Acxiom has long been a vocal advocate for individual privacy rights and protections, ensuring our data is transparent, fair and just. Effective regulation must create a level playing field, governing the industry equitably and enabling both protections and privacy as well as innovation. We are committed to working with policymakers and other stakeholders to develop regulatory principles that reflect the continually evolving dynamic of data-driven business models, as well as individuals’ right to privacy.”
